At Holtspur we use the Charanga music scheme which provides a solid foundation with clear and practical learning steps: children sing and learn to use glockenspiels, ocarinas and percussion such as African drums. In addition, across all year groups we listen to and evaluate 'Music of the Week' which is replayed at each Friday assembly.

All children are encouraged to sing and perform in our weekly assembly, class assemblies, Christmas events and end of year celebrations, and a school choir performs at external events such as the Festival of Lights and the Festival of Choirs. We regularly invite professional musicians into school to demonstrate their skills and inspire the children. In addition, we take year four to the Voice in a Million event at Wembley Arena each March where they sing together with thousands of other children from schools all across the country in a magical evening of shared music.

In Year 5, music lessons are delivered by an internally funded music specialist and every pupil learns to play the guitar.  

We incorporate singing and music across the curriculum (such as our song, “Do it the Holtspur Way”, based on our school values) because evidence shows that learning information in song form helps with recall of facts. Children have further opportunities to receive individual tuition from external providers during the school day.
