Reading is at the heart of our curriculum. We believe that learning to read is fundamental to a child’s understanding of the world and their ability to access the wider curriculum. Through reading, children develop a rich vocabulary, gain knowledge and share in a range of cultural experiences.

Reading is taught daily through dedicated 30-minute lessons. Each half term, a high-quality class text is used to support the teaching of reading skills and to provide a meaningful stimulus for writing across the curriculum.

Throughout their journey, children are encouraged to develop key reading skills, including fluency, comprehension, inference, and vocabulary. We aim to foster a lifelong love of reading by exposing pupils to a diverse range of engaging and challenging texts that inspire curiosity, imagination and a passion for learning.

Accelerated Reader

Once children are able to read accurately and fluently and have completed the RWI programme, they transition onto the Accelerated Reader programme. This transition typically occurs during Year 2.

Pupils develop reading skills most effectively when they are reading appropriately challenging books at their individual challenge point. This is determined by their reading age, which correlates to their reading range.

Children select suitable books within this range and then complete a comprehension quiz to assess their understanding. They complete half-termly Star Reader assessments, which determine their reading age and range moving forward. This progress is tracked regularly to track progress and ensure that any children requiring additional support receive it quickly and effectively. Our library is fully stocked and books are organised and labelled with the correct AR range. Children are independent in selecting books of their choice and interest based on their reading age.
