At Holtspur School, our Writing curriculum aims to develop fluent, confident and purposeful writers. We follow a process approach, teaching children to plan, draft, edit and revise their work so they understand writing as a craft that grows through practice and reflection.

Engaging texts sit at the heart of each writing unit, providing rich language, ideas and structure. We also build in opportunities for imagination, drama and role‑play, allowing children to step into the world of a text, explore characters, and generate vivid ideas that fuel their writing. These creative experiences help bring stories and themes to life and spark children’s enthusiasm for writing.

Technical accuracy is strengthened through explicit teaching of grammar, vocabulary, and structured Spelling Shed sessions, ensuring pupils develop the skills needed for clear, controlled writing. Children learn to edit and proof‑read thoughtfully, improving clarity, impact and accuracy in their work.

Collaboration is woven throughout lessons, with pupils discussing ideas, sharing vocabulary and offering constructive feedback to one another. Every writing sequence has a clear purpose, helping children understand how to adapt their voice, structure and language for different audiences.
