PE

Subject Lead: Miss Bagshaw

At Holtspur School, we believe that every child should experience a wealth of opportunities to be physically active. Through the PE curriculum, extra-curricular clubs and competitive opportunities, we aim to consistently deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities. These experiences enable each child to adopt a love of physical education and sport and promotes a healthy, active lifestyle.

PE lessons

PE is a key part of the curriculum and school life at Holtspur School. We aim to improve self-confidence and wellbeing through a range of sporting activities, which take place in a safe and supportive environment, where effort and hard-work, as well as success, are celebrated.

The curriculum is comprehensive, inclusive and enables children to develop skills for life (working as part of an effective team, fair play, leadership and understanding good sportsmanship) as well as competence in the fundamentals of physical movement and wellbeing. Each half term, we teach a sport specific PE lesson and follow a ‘Real PE’ unit to encourage participation and enjoyment through different activities.

The national curriculum for physical education aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
  • are physically active for sustained periods of time
  • engage in competitive sports and activities
  •  lead healthy, active lives.

South Buckinghamshire School Sports Partnership

We have joined the School Sports Partnership, hosted by Alfriston School. This organisation aligns with our values and believes in a ‘sporting chance for every child’. The partnership provides support from specialist PE teaching staff with a wealth of experience who work alongside our teachers to improve PE teaching. It offers access to a network of schools for continued professional development opportunities and shared good practice. They organise a wide range of sports festivals, which allow competition above intra level to increase children’s participation in School Games competitions. We also organise our own intra and inter school competitions.

Swimming

We aspire for all children to be able to swim at least 25m by the end of their time at Holtspur School. They will be taught to use a range of strokes effectively and perform safe self -rescue.
