Uniform, Jewellery & Hair

Our Equalities statement

Here at Holtspur we do not discriminate against any pupil on the grounds of their sex or sexual orientation, race, colour or religion. We challenge stereotyping whenever it occurs. Items of uniform are not gender specific.

School uniform

Our school has a uniform to identify its members as part of Holtspur School & Preschool. We see the wearing of our uniform as something to be proud of and as a statement of our work and life together as members of the school.

Our aim is to make our uniform as affordable as possible, and we do carry second hand items, although we cannot guarantee having the right sizes always available.

We aim as a school to produce a safe environment where everyone can learn and play in safety. Because of this, we have a policy about what additional jewellery, footwear and clothing for PE can be worn.

We expect all pupils, with the exception of Pre-schoolers, to wear school uniform. Parents can purchase school-specific items such as ties, T-shirts and jumpers with logos, etc from the School Shop in Beaconsfield.  Non-specific clothing such as trousers, skirts and shirts may be bought from any shop selling children’s school uniform.

School specific polo shirts, shorts and fleeces can be purchased from School Shop or through our own PTA shop which sells good quality used items of uniform at significantly reduced prices. Regular sales take place which are advertised to parents.

Parents of children in receipt of Pupil Premium / Free School Meals may request assistance with the purchase of items of school uniform, including shoes and trainers. Parents should approach the school’s Pupil Premium lead, directly to discuss any specific needs. Uniform purchased by the school will be paid for out of the Pupil Premium budget, funded by the government.

All items of uniform must be labelled clearly and permanently with the child’s name.

Hair

Shoulder length hair must be tied back (girls and boys) securely with a simple stretchy band (Maroon/Black). Short hair needs to be kept out of eyes with a simple maroon/black hair band. No flowers, jewels or other decorations. Hair should not be dyed. Fashion cuts – shaved lines and symbols, Mohicans, stripes etc are not allowed. If hair is beaded or plaited during the holidays, it must be securely tied back for reasons of health and safety. If in doubt, please ask before the event.

Jewellery

We do not permit jewellery to be worn at school because there is a Health and Safety risk to the child wearing it and to others. We do however allow small stud earrings and a simple watch (provided there is no digital photo taking capability) to be worn.

We recognise that jewellery or clothing may have a religious significance, in this case they will be allowed, at the discretion of the Headteacher. Parents must first make a request to the Head in writing.

Nail varnish, temporary tattoos and make-up are NOT allowed.

For PE

  • Religious bracelets should be covered by a towelling sweatband
  • Watches must be removed
  • Stud earrings must be removed or taped over (parent to supply tape)

We encourage parents and carers to support in this policy to protect the health and safety of all our children and so that precious jewellery and watches are not brought to school.
