  • Primary Mathematics Challenge 2018 - 19 ... Congratulations!

    Fri 22 Mar 2019

The Primary Mathematics Challenge is a fun and exciting mathematical Challenge aimed at pupils in Year 5.

The PMC is designed to make pupils think outside the box. The questions asked are not necessarily subjects that have been covered in the curriculum.  The PMC is not designed to be just another test in the school year.  It encourages enthusiasm, boosts confidence in mathematics and shows the different way questions can be asked.

2375 pupils were invited to take part in the Bonus Round and we are delighted to announce that two of our children, Sarah and Leo received bronze medals.  This is a huge achievement and we are extremely proud of them both.  Well done Sarah and Leo.

  • World Book Day ... Fancy Dress ... Story in a Jar ... Extreme Reading!

    Wed 06 Mar 2019

This year for World book day we are arranging lots of fun and exciting activities to capture the passion of reading. Below are 3 different ways you can join in at home.

    Fancy Dress

On World Book day the children can come into school dressed as their favourite book character. They will have an opportunity to share their costume and book with the rest of their class. We are happy to help any children if they are struggling to find costumes at home as we have many dressing up clothes in school.

    Extreme Reading

We would also like the children to take part in an extreme reading competition. Over the next 4 weeks please take a photo, draw a picture or write a description of the most obscure place your child has been found reading and send it in to class before World Book Day. We will award a first, second and third prize for the most creative.

    Story in a Jar

At home the children can also create a story in a jar to share in school on World Book Day. This doesn’t have to match their costume. We will have all the jars on display in the hall on Friday 8 March at the end of the school day.

  • Exciting news from PTA - The Nest Garden Community Project receives £5,000 cash boost!

    Sun 24 Feb 2019

The Nest Garden Community Project Receives £5000 cash boost

    From Heathrow Community Fund

A community project set up to develop and create an outdoor learning garden and nature area has received a £5000 grant from Heathrow Community Fund.

The scheme will allow Holtspur School & Pre-School to complete the Nest Garden project – bring the learning of planting, growing and harvesting to a whole new level. There will be areas for all years to work in the garden and produce their own fruits and vegetables. They will also experience the skills of decomposition, nature and other outdoor learning skills in the perfect environment.

Holtspur School & Pre-School was awarded the donation under Heathrow Community Fund’s Communities for Youth grants programme.

Quote from community project spokesman: “Heathrow Community Fund is part of an independent grant-making charity set up by Heathrow’s owners to support and strengthen local communities close to the airport. In the past two years it has donated more than £1 million through three grant programmes, funding projects which support young people, help protect the environment and support active local communities.

Funds come from an annual donation from the airport, fines imposed on aircraft that breach noise limits, Heathrow colleagues who raise funds for us, and John Lewis.

The fund also supports and encourages Heathrow staff to volunteer and support the local communities where they live.

More information about the fund and how to apply for grants is available on the website www.heathrow.com/communityfund

  • Change 4 Life - Letter & Diary Sheet

    Fri 15 Feb 2019

    Dear Parents and Carers,

During our Healthy Eating show at the end of last month, the children were taught about proteins, carbohydrates and fates and how we needed some of each. They were also shown the perils of eating too much food with sugar and fat!

As a follow up to this, we would like you to do a fun activity with your children over half term, so they can see what they are eating, how much exercise they are doing and record any small changes you or they are making towards a healthier diet.

The diary the children brought home can be filled out daily over the course of half term and teachers can then share some of the good ideas and healthy choices some of the children are making.

Please note, this is a light-hearted activity but with a serious message. Nobody will be called out for their choices, but it may help your children to become more aware of their choices.

For more information about Change4life, go onto their website:

    https://www.nhs.uk/change4life

We wish to thank the Freemasonary organisation for paying for the cost of the show, which all the children participated in.

Enjoy half term. The diaries will be collected back in on Monday 25th February.
